After a thorough study of the usage of the word Sheng(乘) in the phrases Sheng Qin(乘禽), Sheng Ma(乘马) , Sheng Hu(乘壶), Sheng Shi(乘矢) and Sheng Wei (乘韦) in ancient documents, the author draws the conclusion that Sheng(乘)in Sheng Qin(乘禽) means "two", but it means "four" in Sheng Ma (乘马), Sheng Hu(乘壶), Sheng Shi(乘矢) and Sheng Wei (乘韦).
本文就《广雅疏证》与《方言笺疏》中“乘”的释义作出分析,全面地考察了“乘禽、乘马、乘矢、乘壶、乘韦”之“乘”在上古文献中的应用情况,从而得出结论:“乘禽”之“乘”,其义为“二”,而“乘马、乘矢、乘壶、乘韦”之“乘”,其义为“四”。
