南开大学为适应我国经济、社会发展对人才的需要，充分发挥学校师资、实验条件的优势，提高办学效益，在日校本科生、研究生教育不断发展的同时，积极发展成人高等教育。 南开大学成人高等教育始于1965年，“文革”中断后，于1981年恢复，经原国家教育委员会1986年12月1日（教计字[1986]188号）批准，南开大学建立成人教育学院。 南开大学成人高等教育在“教育要面向现代化、面向世界、面向未来”和成人教育“一要改革，二要发展”的方针指导下，坚持为社会主义改革开放和现代化建设服务，主动适应经济建设和社会发展的需要，不断调整专业结构，更新教学内容，增加办学投入，特别注重办学质量和社会效益，南开大学成人高等教育已步入良性发展的轨道。 南开大学成人高等教育在办学形式及层次上，先后开办了夜大学专科、专接本及第二学历；函授专科、专接本及第二学历；成人脱产班（本、专科）；干部专修科；中等学校师资本专科；高等职业技术教育；专业证书班。在办学过程中，已相继开设了夜大学专科27个专业，本科12个专业；高等函授教育专科15个专业，本科7个专业；成人脱产班12个专业。现南开大学成人高等教育在校夜大学本专科生3270人，脱产班本专科2374人,高等函授教育本专科生2272人。 在大学后继续教育中，我校被国务院及国家有关部委、天津市指定为“开放地区领导干部培训基地”、“企业管理人员工商管理培训基地”、“国际商务师培训基地”、“外销员培训基地”、“职业技能培训基地”、“全国高级图书情报干部培训基地”、“全国信息应用技术培训基地”、“高职、高专成人高校师资培训基地”、“天津市计算机培训中心”、“全国保险代理人资格培训考试中心”、“计算机应用能力考核培训中心”等，举办各类相关短期培训及岗位培训班。 我校还是较早被天津市高等教育自学考试委员会确定的高自考主考高校之一。从1983年至今我校开设了10个本科专业、19个专科专业的高自考助学班。 南开大学的成人高等教育是学校教育事业的重要组成部分，做为南开大学的正规办学形式，在管理上已建立起完善的组织管理机构和规范的管理规章制度。在组织管理上，全校成人高等教育在校长领导下，由成人教育学院归口管理。 南开大学成人高等教育改革发展16年来，取得了显著的成绩，受到社会和主管部门的肯定。办学16年来共培养本专科毕业生3万多名。他们在全国24个省市不同的工作岗位上，发挥了骨干作用，做出了显著成绩。南开大学也先后获得天津市“成人高等教育先进单位”、“科技人员继续教育工作先进单位”、“天津市高等教育自学考试先进主考校”等称号。
