The studies on Chinese minority arts in the first half of the 20th century emerged in the transitional period of Chinese society and in the context of the cultural conflicts between China and the West and were under the internal control of the general law of such studies,and focused on the practice of the research subject.
20世纪上半叶的中国少数民族艺术研究是在中国社会变迁和中西文化交流冲撞的背景下,以中国少数民族艺术研究的整体性规律为内在制约,以研究主体的实践活动为线索而展开并发展壮大。

中国舞蹈学术研究机构。成立于1980年，它的前身是中央艺术研究机构舞蹈组(1974)、文学艺术研究院音乐舞蹈研究室舞蹈研究组(1976)、文学艺术研究院舞蹈研究室(1978)。吴晓邦、董锡玖先后任所长。研究所分设舞蹈理论研究室、舞蹈史研究室、编辑部、资料室等。自1981年开始招收舞蹈硕士学位研究生，现任所长资华筠。
研究所主要从事系统研究舞蹈基础理论、中外舞蹈史论及当代舞蹈理论、评论等，以推动和发展中国的舞蹈事业。1980年创办了《舞蹈艺术》（季刊），编辑出版了《中国舞蹈史》、《中国古代舞蹈史话》、《舞蹈概论》、《敦煌舞姿》、《舞蹈编导知识》、《汉族民间舞简介》、《中国古代舞蹈家的故事》等书籍，并经常举办各类舞蹈学术讲座。
