西方伦理学中表示道德原则和伦理学说的两种不同的术语。"自律"一词希腊语意为自己的规律;"他律"的希腊语意为他的规律。在西方伦理思想史上，德国古典哲学家I.康德第一次使用"自律"和"他律"，以表示他的伦理学说与其他伦理学说的区别。在康德那里,所谓"自律"就是从主体内在的道德观念中引申出道德原则，以强调道德原则的独立性和自身价值；"他律"则是从不依赖于主体意志的外在原因（如上帝意志、社会法规和先天感觉）中，引申出道德原则。所谓自律伦理学和他律伦理学，就是根据内在原因或外在原因引申出道德原则的理论，它们或者崇拜意志自律，否认社会发展的客观规律的制约，或者忽视行为的主动作用，否认意志自由，因而都具有一定的片面性。
