反映两类不同性质的矛盾的哲学范畴。社会生活中复杂多样的矛盾，按其性质不同，可分为对抗性的和非对抗性的两种类型。对抗性矛盾是指矛盾双方在根本性质和根本利益上互相敌对、不可调和的矛盾，其斗争形式一般表现为剧烈的外部冲突。在阶级社会中，剥削阶级和被剥削阶级的根本利益对立，其矛盾的性质是对抗的。一般要通过双方的激烈斗争和剧烈的外部冲突的形式加以解决。非对抗性矛盾是矛盾双方在根本利益一致基础上的矛盾，一般不表现为剧烈的外部冲突，即不表现为对抗的形式。对抗性矛盾和非对抗性矛盾，主要用来说明社会生活中的矛盾，但有时也指自然界中的某些矛盾。
正确区分对抗性与非对抗性矛盾，采取与矛盾性质相适应的斗争形式，是无产阶级政党正确区分和处理敌我矛盾和人民内部矛盾的理论基础。敌我矛盾是对抗性的矛盾，人民内部矛盾是非对抗性的矛盾；对敌我矛盾一般要采取革命的方法解决，在社会主义制度下，则要按照法律程序采取专政的方法解决;对人民内部矛盾,则必须采取民主的方法解决。不能混淆两类不同性质的矛盾，采用不适当的斗争形式。
