By introducing and analyzing the characteristics of classification and thesaurus when applied in subject gateways,this paper summarizes the method of applying controlled language in subject gateways and its functionsand advantages.

In this article some advantages and disadvantages of controlled language and natural language in label and retrieval process of information were investigated by way of comparing the development and application of both languages.
