属阿尔泰语系满-通古斯语族通古斯语支。分布在中国内蒙古自治区鄂温克族自治旗、陈巴尔虎旗、额尔古纳左旗、莫力达瓦达斡尔族自治旗、阿荣旗、鄂伦春自治旗、扎兰屯市以及黑龙江省的讷河县。使用人口约1.7万(1982)。分 3个方言：①海拉尔方言，主要通行于鄂温克族自治旗；②陈巴尔虎方言,通行于陈巴尔虎旗;③额尔古纳方言，通行于额尔古纳左旗。牧区通用蒙古文，其他地区通用汉文。在国外，鄂温克语分布于苏联，称作埃文基语，使用人口约 1.2万(1979)。另外，蒙古人民共和国约有1000人使用这种语言。语音方面，有 8个短元音：i、I、媅、a、o、婖、u、悥,有 10个长元音:i:、I:、e:、Ε:、媅:、a:、o:、婖:、u:、悥:；元音根据搭配特点，分阴性元音和阳性元音两类。元音和谐以性属和谐为主，以唇状和谐为辅。辅音有15个：b、p、w、m、d、t、n、l、r、扵、∫、j、ɡ、x、嬜。辅音有大量同化现象，因此在词中常出现长辅音。语法方面，名词的格较多，半数以上表示方位或兼表方位的意义。宾格、方位格各有两个，分别表示动作的对象和方向是确定的还是泛指的。动词有人称形式。副动词根据带不带领属附加成分,分为人称、反身、不变化3类。句型的特点是动词谓语句比体词谓语句多。动词居于句尾。词汇中反映畜牧生产方式的词较多。构词手段主要是派生法，其次是合成法。有来自汉语和蒙古语的借词。
