Based on the discovery of the littoral sandbar in 1980s,this paper manages to locate the Dongsha formed in the Tang Dynasty,and further points out that the framework of Chongming Island was formed in early Yuan Dynasty.

On the bases of field sampling and analysis, this study is conducted to compare the effect of riparian buffer vegetation type and monitoring wells depth on ammonium nitrogen and total phosphor concentration , The results show: (1) vegetation type has effect on ammonium nitrogen and total phosphor concentration variation (2) ammonium nitrogen and total phosphor removal from the groundwater .

Different vegetations native and common to Shanghai were selected to form plant communities different in sod∶shrub∶arbor ratio for an experiment laid out in a riparian buffer zone experiment base,Dongfeng Port,Qingpu District,Shanghai,to determine their effects on control of non-point source pollution and soil erosion.

Riparian buffer as a technology widely used abroad these years for non-point pollution control and soil conservation is reviewed,and a demonstration project similar to the riparian buffers has been erected on river banks of a stream in Shanghai.

In the recent decade, with the extensive opening of Pudong New Area and the rapid increment of economy in Shanghai, the new large-scale exploitation along Shanghai coastal zone is on the upsurge, which resulted in the complete change of the original land-use structure.

The final results show that: the riparian buffer strips can effectively remove SS in runoff water and the nutrients in seepage water;the differences of sward and gradient have notable influence on the pollutants purification of buffer strips.

There are many ecological and environmental problems in China, such as shorting of water, water pollution, sharp reducing of species and so on, so it s quite significative to research the management of riparian buffer strips.
