交换的均衡在消费者收入和偏好既定的情况下，消费者所能购买的各种数量的商品能使他获得最大效用。它是西方经济理论中实现帕累托最优状态的条件之一;任何两种商品之间的边际替代率(MRS)对任何两个消费者都相等。用公式表示: MRSA一MRSB式中A、B表示任何两个消费者。公式表示，消费者A的商品边际替代率等于B的商品边际替代率口当任何两个消费者的任何两种商品的边际替代率相等时，交换就达到了帕累托最优状态，即实现了交换的均衡。因为，在这种状态下，任何重新分配者无法使一个消费者的满足水平提高而不使另一个消费者的满足水平下降。在完全竞争的商品市场上能够实现交换的均衡。因为商品市场上消费者均衡的条件为两种商品的边际替代率等于两种商品的价格比率。而在完全竞争市场上，所有的消费者都花相同的价格购买商品，所以所有的消费者的商品边际替代率都相等，所有的消费者都同时实现了均衡。这一最优条件也可用埃奇沃斯盒状图来说明，在契约曲线上的任何一点都满足交换的均衡条件。
