印度印地语文学中的进步思潮,开始于20年代末,盛行于30年代和40年代前半期。由于民族独立斗争中工人运动的高涨，无产阶级及其政党作为独立的政治力量出现，俄国十月社会主义革命的成功以及马列主义的传播，不少作家和诗人受到影响，创作了带进步色彩的作品。1936年在穆尔克·拉吉·安纳德和萨加德·查希尔等人的发起下成立了印度进步作家协会，他们主张文学的使命在于争取民族独立和改造社会，批评为艺术而艺术的理论，倡导现实主义的创作方法。进步文学在诗歌方面的代表作是苏米特拉南登·本德的《时代之声》(1939)，在小说方面是耶谢巴尔的《达达同志》(1941)和《叛国者》(1943)，在理论方面是西沃丹·辛赫·觉杭的《论进步文学》和《文学概论》。
50、60年代,进步作品仍不断涌现。70年代中期,很多作家又组成了全印进步作家总会，各大、中城市和各语言地区成立分会，组织作家开展创作活动。
