1.借指平民。晋诸葛长民，有武功，历官显要。曾督青扬二州诸军事，领青州刺史，又领晋陵太守，镇丹徒。长民骄纵贪侈，不恤政事，所在残虐，为百姓所苦。常惧刘裕绳之以法，乃叹曰:"贫贱常思富贵，富贵必履机危。今日欲为丹徒布衣，岂可得也!"后果为刘裕所杀。见《晋书．诸葛长民传》。 2.指南朝宋刘穆之。穆之东莞莒(今山东莒县)人，世居京口(丹徒)，少时家贫，常就岳家乞食。一日食饱求槟榔，其妻兄弟戏之曰:"槟榔消食，君乃常饥，何忽须此?"及穆之为丹阳尹，召妻兄弟饮，至醉饱，令厨人以金盘盛槟榔一斛进之。见《南史．刘穆之传》。后以指贫困未遇之士。
