佛教把众生世界分为“三界”。其中欲界包括六欲天、人间和地狱;色界包括四禅十八天;无色界包括四空天。三界是众生生死轮回的处所,充满痛苦烦恼,被喻为“火宅”。“五行”原是中国古代的哲学概念,指构造物质世界的五大元素:金、木、水、火、土。这“五行”不但有各自的本质特征,而且相互之间有生成、克制等联系,从而构成了万物及其运动变化。“超出三界外”就是超出生死轮回,“不在五行中”就是不受物质的障碍。俗语“超出三界外,不在五行中”指超凡脱俗,不受世俗的污染和拘束。如《封神演义》第二六回:“妹妹既系出家,原是‘超出三界外,不在五行中’。岂得以世俗男女分别而论。”又如《三宝太监西洋记演义》第二六回:“真君道:我既超三界外,不在五行中,怎么又来管你凡间什么闲争闲闹斗?”(李明权)
