用球向悬在高处的球篮进行投准比赛的一项球类运动。球用皮制，内装橡皮胆，圆周75～78厘米，重600～650克。球场长26米，宽14米，两端中央设有球架，在离地305米处装上内径45厘米的球篮。两队对抗，每队五人，分别担任中锋、前锋和后卫。在互相攻守中，运用传球、运球、抢截及投篮等技术和战术，把球投入对方球篮得分。比赛40分钟，分上下半场(美国职业篮球赛全场比赛为48分钟，分四节进行)。以全场得分多者为胜。
