土地革命战争时期，中国共产党领导的革命根据地之一。位于湖南、湖北、四川、贵州四省边界地区。亦称湘鄂川黔苏区。1934年10月中国工农红军第 2军团和第 6军团在黔东革命根据地会师后，即向湖南省西部地区进击，接连攻占了永顺、大庸、桑植等县城及广大乡村。11月26日，成立了中共湘鄂川黔省委、省革命委员会和省军区，任弼时任省委书记兼军区政治委员，贺龙任省革命委员会主席兼军区司令员。至1935年1月,湘鄂川黔革命根据地初步建立。根据地包括永顺、大庸、桑植三县的大部地区和龙山、保靖、桃源、常德、慈利五县的部分地区,东西200余公里,南北120余公里，人口约50万,建立了县、区、乡革命政权和共产党的组织;主力红军由7000余人发展到1.1万余人,并建立了独立团、游击队。2～8月，红军打破了国民党军80余团的"围剿"，保卫了根据地。9月，国民党军以130个团的兵力，对根据地进行新的"围剿"。红军因多次寻战未果，于11月19日撤离湘鄂川黔革命根据地，进行长征。
