【说明】至1994年，我国经国务院核定公布为历史文化名城的，共99个国家级历史文化名城：其中第一批最早列入保护名单的，有北京、苏州、杭州、广州、遵义、延安等24个城市；列入第二批保护名单的，有上海、武汉、天津、哈尔滨等38个城市。列入第三批保护名单的，有乐山、衢州等37个城市。目前我国的历史文化名城分为国家级与省级二级，评为国家级的历史文化名城，必须首先是经过省级人民政府批准的省级历史文化名城。
