Based on the data from the written questionnaire,the research question on how pragmatic distance works on the linguistic choices of Chinese EFL learners is investigated.

Aiming to adapt personal relationship,people tend to enlarge or shorten the pragmatic distance with the people they address to by using first personal/deictic projection in daily communication.

In communication,the choice of the personal dexis is decided by the social relations of thsides,at the same time,it can change the pragmatic distance of both communication of sides,enlarge or reduces interpersonal relationship distan.

The deduction of the initial pragmatic distance is often determined by the choice of personal deixis.

The iconicity of politeness in the mental representation is discussed,which can be examined from cognitive context iconicity,pragmatic distance iconicity and scalar quantity iconicity.

Our study shows that for their driving mechanism,the Adaptation Theory(a general perspective on linguistic phenomena),when combined with the Pragmatic Distance Theory,has a way to figure it out.

Firstly, the cost models of three editing operations used to compute semantic distance between XML documents are given.
