以人类语言学和社会学为基础建立起来的语法系统。系统语法是 1961年语法学家 M.A.K.哈立迪首次提出的，其基本思想是将语言看成是具有多种功能并由若干分系统组成的复杂系统。在系统语法中，语言被划分为句子、子句、词组、词、词素五种具有不同层次结构的单元。每一单元由一个或几个低层次单元组成，例如英语子句通常由四个词组组成，这些词组分别作为子句的主语、谓语动词、补语、修饰语等。
