描述GymnocladusLam.肥皂荚属，云实科，3－4种，分布于北美、缅甸和我国，其中肥皂荚G.chinensisBaill.产我国西部经中部至东部，其荚供洗濯用，可为肥皂的代用品，和以檀香、樟脑、麝香、蜂蜜等可制成上等香皂；果又供药用，治疮癣、肿毒等症；种子炒熟可食。落叶乔木，无刺；叶互生，二回羽状复叶；托叶大，早落；小叶卵形，全缘；花两性或单性，辐射对称，排成总状花序；萼管状，5裂，有一腺状的花盘；花瓣4－5，分离，绿白至淡紫色，长圆形，覆瓦状排列；雄蕊10，离生；子房有胚珠4－8颗；荚果略扁，厚而有瓤，2爿裂；种子大，外种皮硬而革质。
