指在广大地区里通常共同说的词语。见于汉扬雄所作的 《輶轩使者绝代语释别国方言》 (简称《方言》)。"通语"是对"方言"来说的,即不是一方一地之言。例如《方言》卷一说："娥、，好也。秦曰娥，宋魏之间谓之。秦晋之间，凡好而轻者谓之娥;自关而东,河济之间谓之媌，或谓之姣；赵魏燕代之间曰姝，或曰妦。自关而西，秦晋之故都曰妍。好，其通语也。"扬雄所说的"通语"就是各地能通行的普通词语，含义也是一般性的，跟各地特有所指的方言词语不同。在扬雄书里"通语"有时也说"凡语"。
