现代主义音乐的创作手法之一。用以指音与音之间、和弦与和弦之间无调性中心，没有功能联系，缺乏调性感觉的创作手法与音乐类型。它产生于20世纪初期，由19世纪后期音乐中变音体系的极度发展、调性的频繁变化、和弦结构的复杂化以及功能联系的消失等因素而逐步形成。它的特点为无中心音或中心和弦，无调号，无调式特性，半音阶的各音均可自由应用，尽可能不采用传统的和弦结构，避免能产生调性作用的和声进行。与此有关的是旋律、和声、曲式、节奏与音乐构成方法均与传统有极大的差异。由于无调性音乐乃逐步形成，因此，调性模糊的音乐与无调性音乐之间，在感觉上常无明确的界限。
无调性一词最初用以形容A.勋伯格作品中开始完全脱离传统的作品（自作品10号《第二弦乐四重奏》的最后乐章起至作品22号，均属这一类型）及其学生A.贝格、A.von韦贝恩等同类作品的特性。现代一般通用的无调性一词，并不局限于勋伯格等作品的特性，而是所有具备无调性音乐特点的一种现代音乐类型的总称。
