中国佛教宗派之一。以修禅定为主，故名。南朝宋末菩提达摩由天竺(印度)来华创立。至五祖弘忍门下，分成北方神秀的渐悟说和南方慧能的顿悟说两宗，时称“南能北秀”。北宗数传即衰，独南宗盛行，成为禅宗正系。唐后期几乎取代其他宗派，禅学成为佛学的代名词，影响及于宋明理学。提倡心性本净，佛性本有，强调“以无念为宗”和“即心是佛”、“见性成佛”，故自称“顿门”。门派众多，但南宋以来，只有临济、曹洞二宗盛行，且流传到日本。
