原名沈承宽，北京人。中共党员。1950年肄业于中央美术学院油画系。毕业后留校任教，1957年起历任《文艺学习》、《人民文学》、《文艺报》、《美术》编辑，中国社科院文研所《中国现代作家作品研究资料》丛书编委，副编审。1948年开始发表作品。著有评论《评茹志鹃的短篇小说》、《鲁迅与张天翼》、《张天翼的第一篇小说》、《〈包氏父子〉——从小说到电影》，编辑《张天翼文集》(10卷)等。
