1964年在日内瓦成立。现有会员国30个，总部设在主席所在地（现设德意志联邦共和国不来梅），正式工作语言为英语。国际体育社会学委员会受国际社会学协会和国际体育运动理事会的双重领导。委员会的宗旨是：利用社会学来发展体育。委员会的领导机构是主席团和扩大执委会。主席团由主席、秘书长和两名副主席组成。扩大执委会由10人组成，每4年改选1次，用通讯表决的办法选举。委员会的会员分常任会员和通讯会员两种,常任会员有权参加国际社会学协会和本委员会的一切会议,并拥有表决权。委员会出版《国际体育社会学公报》。
