在美国文学史上，曾有一批优秀的文学女性对美国文学的发展作出过重大贡献。例如废奴文学的优秀作家斯陀夫人，现代派诗歌的先驱艾米利·狄金森，以描绘边疆拓荒生活见长的薇拉·凯瑟等。但是他们基本上仍是以当时占统治地位的男性文学观为指导而创作的，所以说当时并不存在真正的女权文学。 20世纪60年代初，美国出现了真正的女权文学，它随着黑人民权运动和反战运动的蓬勃发展而产生的。女权文学的主要特征，是发女在学生为主体的知识女性为主要发起人和参加者。他们不像前几代女权主义者那样热衷于妇女的政治活动，不以争得和男子同等的政治经济地位为最终目的，而是把打碎传统文化强加于她们的种种精神桎梏，获得彻底精神解放作为奋斗目标。于是她们拿起笔，向传统文化的陈腐观念发起攻击，树立了反传统的女性文化。70年代后，随着女权运动的深入和妇女地位的提高，越来越多的知识女性进入文坛，她们坚持从妇女日常生活中汲取素材，在作品中着重描写妇女在现代社会中的种种遭遇，特别是妇女们所受到的歧视和她们的抗争。在这批女性文学家的努力下，一种以女权主义为思想基础，与当代社会生活密切相关的新文学—女权文学逐渐形成了。这一文学思潮的诞生，像一股清风吹进了当时脱离实际生活，一味沉湎于个人内心意识活动的沉闷的文坛，对引导文学家们投身火热的社会、改变创作风格起了促进作用。它的主要作家有乔伊斯·卡洛尔·欧茨、阿纳依斯·宁等。
