汉宣帝神爵元年（公元前61）春，居今青海湖一带的西羌先零部胁迫诸部起兵反汉，危及汉河西诸郡。年已76岁的赵充国自请为将，六月率骑兵万人及步兵自金城（今兰州西北）出发，沿湟水西进至临羌（今青海湟源）。采取打击先零、招抚诸部羌人的方略，于秋天攻破先零部，继入其余诸部，禁止烧杀掳掠，善待部族首领，诸部不战而服。时先零余部远避于山林险阻，赵充国奏准留步兵九校、吏士万人沿湟水屯田。先零余部日渐离散。赵充国于次年五月回师。秋，西羌诸部归汉。
