性质：在普通的气相色谱质谱联用仪(GC/MS)的进样系统中加一个热裂解器，在热裂解器中，高聚物大分子被加热裂解成小分子气体，载气辛巴这些小分子带入色谱仪进行分离，再引入质谱仪进行电离和分析，质谱仪给出这些小分子的质谱图，化学家可以根据质谱结果，推测出原来高聚物的种类和可能结构。
