属汉藏语系、苗瑶语族,语支未定。畲族有36.8万多人，分布在中国的福建、浙江、广东、江西、安徽等省的部分山区，基本上都使用汉语客家方言，只有广东博罗、惠东等4个县10多个山村里的畲族，约1000多人,自称"活聂",他们在本民族的交往中使用原有的语言。畲语有单辅音声母13个。带鼻冠音的复辅音只出现在塞音声母类。韵母有28个。带塞音韵尾的基本上是借自汉语客家方言的词。有8个声调,与汉语的平、上、去、入各分阴阳的情况基本一致。词序和虚词是表达语法意义的主要手段。名词、形容词、代词和数量词组作修饰语时，一般在中心词前，只有少数几个形容词在中心词后。指示代词有近指、中指、远指之分。形容词和量词重叠后表示某种语法意义。数词有基数、计位数、计月数、计日数4套,各有不同的使用范围。句子的主语在谓语前，宾语、补语在谓语后。词根基本上是单音节的。构词方式大部分是词根与词根相结合,带附加成分的词不多。合成词比较丰富,以修饰结构的居多。汉语借词特别丰富。根据各地畲语词汇的差异,可分为莲花、罗浮两个方言,不同方言的人互相可以通话。
