阳城县北留镇皇城村，枕山临水，依山而筑，城墙雄伟，雉堞林立，官宅民居，鳞次栉比，是一组别具特色的古代建筑群。皇城相府旅游景区就是以这组古建筑群为载体兴建的。
皇城相府分内外城建筑。内城为陈廷敬伯父陈昌于明崇祯壬午年（1642年）年建，外城为陈廷敬于清康熙四十二年（1703年）所建，城门正中石匾刻“中道庄”三字。该村在明清里甲制时代，一直属于郭峪里。民国年间及解放后致1960年，该村属郭峪乡或郭峪管理区。1961年成为独立大队，1984年成为行政村。上世纪80年代地名普查时称黄城村，但该村印章打破禁区刻为“皇城”村。
1998年10月，“清代名相陈廷敬暨皇城古建学术研讨会”在阳城举行，拉开了打造“皇城相府”旅游品牌的帷幕。2001年，电视连续剧《康熙王朝》播映，使该处旅游景区在国内声名大震。同年3月，荣获“山西省十佳文明景区”称号。10月通过了ｉｓｏ9002国际质量体系认证。2002年3月，通过国家旅游局对38个大项，196个小项标准的评审，获国家4ａ级景区称号
