Since the reign of Emperor Zhenzong in the Song Dynasty,cabins had been constructed especially for the collection of past emperors laws,works,poetry,painting and calligraphy,in the nature of today s archives.
宋代皇宫内除了有专门的藏书处所与皇帝个人读书宴息的殿阁外,自真宗朝起,创设了为前朝去世的君主建置专门殿阁,收藏其御书、御制与诗文著作、书法手迹的制度,一直延续到南宋度宗朝。

1.殿堂楼阁。 2.宋代大学士皆带殿阁衔﹐以崇其资望﹐如集贤殿﹑右文殿之类。明清两代﹐大学士为内阁长官﹐仍以殿阁名入衔﹐如明之中极殿﹑建极殿﹑文华殿﹑武英殿﹑文渊阁﹑东阁;清之保和殿﹑文华殿﹑武英殿﹑文渊阁﹑东阁﹑体仁阁等。故宰执又通称为"殿阁"。
