成长小说亦称启蒙小说(novel of initiation),此概念最初源於德国,是西方近代文学中颇重要也常见的一个类型。简单说来,这类小说处理的是主角(几乎清一色为男性,那年头女性好像不被视为有成长启蒙的可能)自幼年或少年至成年、自天真无知至成熟世故的历练过程:或许进入社会吃亏吃苦而逐渐明白世途艰难人心险恶,或许经历某个或某些重大事件而使人生有所领悟有所改变;而在这番「转大人」的领悟和改变完成之际,故事亦於焉到达(圆满的,或虽不圆满但尚称释然的)尾声。
