生理学名。是在生物适应繁衍进化 过程中逐渐形成并固定下来的非条件反射，是由性染色体决定的性行为模式。在自然界中，性本能有三种作用：即物种生存、物种繁衍、物种创造。但人类纯粹的 性本能是不存在的。男性和女性因为性染色体的差异，所以在性行为上存在着性本能意义上 的差别。在性行为学中，常常把两性在性行为上的本能差别称为第四性征。人类的性本能一部分是由遗传因素决定的，它决定性行为动作发生的时间与力度，例如只有在青春期的男女，才有与异性接近的愿望；当两性感情交融时，都有性交的欲望和阴茎勃起、阴道润滑的行为本能；另一部分是对后天环境条件的反馈反应，籍以控制性行为动作的空间定向，并决定后续动作是否接着产生。性本能作为一种极其复杂的行为，它是由一系列的行为组成的，其中每种行为又有一系列固定次序的活动构成。作为固定程序的性本能，又具有很大的适应性。
