包头市工业学校创建于1979年，当时为技工学校。1981年改为中等专业学校。现设机械制造、机电、电子计算机应用、工业经济、工业财务会计、工业外贸等6个专业。学制四年，招收初中毕业生。1990年，有在校生445人，其他类学生477人，教职工148人，其中专任教师71人，专任教师中高级讲师2人，讲师26人。除教学楼宿舍楼、大礼堂等基础设施外，还建有物理、化学、机械、电工实验室，电子计算机房，实习工厂和校办工厂。近年来，适应包头地区工业发展的需求，坚持多种形式办学，在办好普通中专的同时，还举办职工中专班、电大及函授大专班、岗位培训班。建校以来，已培养大、中专毕业生1750人，培训厂长、经理及各类专业技术人员1300多人。
