When the New Fourth Army fought against the Japanese invaders in Yanfu area,from October 1940 to August 1945,they actively carried out all forms of cultural activities,such as literature,music,art,drama performance,singing and so on which had a tremendous impact on the warfare and the cultural activities in the anti-Japanese bases of the north of Jiangsu province.

Nuo culture,originated from a religious folk-custom in Yanfu areas,a unique performing form taken by sorcerers in ancient festivals to exorcise the devil causing any plague,developed into a play concerning pray for blessings,then into an activity greeting the god to drive away the plague,at last into Huai opera,a local opera well-known in Yanfu areas.
