中国的气象教育事业,自1949年以来有很大发展,除教育部系统外，国家气象局系统也建立了高等和中等气象院校。
1921年，东南大学在地学系首次设立气象课程，创始人竺可桢。该校改名为中央大学之后，于1945年成立了气象系,系主任黄厦千。中华人民共和国成立之后,中央大学改名为南京大学，在气象学系中设有气象、气候、大气物理三个专业。气象学家涂长望、朱炳海、徐尔灏、黄士松，也先后主持此气象系的工作。清华大学从1929年开始,也在地学系设气象课程；1935年成立气象组,黄厦千、涂长望、刘衍淮、李宪之等气象学家先后在此任教；1946年成立气象系，系主任李宪之。1952年清华大学气象系合并于北京大学物理系，成为该系的气象专业；1959年易名为地球物理系。现该系设有气象、大气物理和高层大气物理三个专业。气象学家赵九章和谢义炳也先后主持清华、北大气象系的工作。教育部系统除南京大学和北京大学，还在中国科学技术大学、兰州大学、中山大学、杭州大学、云南大学、山东海洋学院、北京农业大学、沈阳农学院和广西农学院等，设有气象专业。
