【三纲】
（职位）各寺设三人役务，吾国有上座，寺主，维那，或上座，维那，典座，日本谓之上座，寺主，都维那。如僧纲，以有德之人为纲绳而提挈之，故云纲。西天之诸寺仅有上座之一纲。求法高僧传上曰：“寺内但以最老上座而为尊主，不论其德。诸有门钥每宵封印，将付上座，更无别置寺主维那，但造寺之人为寺主。梵云毗诃罗莎弭Viharasvamin，若作香直典掌寺门及和僧白事者，名毗诃罗波罗Viharapala，译为护寺。若鸣犍椎及监食者，名为羯磨陀那Karmadana，译为授事。言维那者讹也。”吾国东汉后唯置寺主，使知一寺之事。秦魏已后，始有上座之敕补，而置于寺主维那之上，由此而三纲之称起。僧史略中曰：“寺之设也，三纲立焉，若网罟之巨纲，提之则正故曰也。梵语摩摩帝，悉替那Sthavira，羯磨陀那，华言寺主上座悦众。”又“道宣敕为西明寺上座，列寺主维那上。”名义集曰：“隋智琳，润州刺史李海游，命琳为断事纲维。尔护寺立三纲，上座维那典座也。”
