20世纪90年代以来中国近代社会史研究异军突起,确立了作为一个学科在当今中国学术界的地位。

1932年北京社会调查所创办的中国第一份经济史学刊物。1935年第三卷起改由南京国立中央研究院社会科学研究所出版。以研究经济问题，带动其他社会科学的研究和发展为宗旨。每年出版一卷两期。自第一卷第一期（1932年11月出版）至第四卷第一期（1936年 5月出版）由陶孟和、汤象龙主编。第五卷第一期（1937年3月出版）起改名为《中国社会经济史集刊》，编辑委员会由朱庆永、谷霁光、吴晗、吴铎、夏鼐、孙毓棠、张荫麟、梁方仲、汤象龙、刘隽、罗尔纲组成。强调注重政治史、社会史、经济史的专门研究。抗日战争爆发后,南京沦陷，社会科学研究所内迁四川南溪。第六卷于1939年6月和12月在昆明出版。自第七卷第一期（1944年6月出版）起，编辑事宜改由社会科学研究所负责，主编陶孟和、梁方仲，重申注重经济史、社会史、政治史方面的专门研究。抗日战争胜利后，社会科学研究所迁回南京,出版了第七卷第二期（1946年7月）和第八卷第一期（1949年1月）。此后该刊停办。
