性质:天然硼中,丰度占19.6%的10B是很强的热中子吸收剂。硼是非金属,又硬又脆,不易加工,在辐照下因生成的氦释放出来而引起肿胀。实际应用碳化硼、金属硼化物、含硼合金和硼硅酸盐玻璃等含硼材料。溶于水的硼酸溶液在反应堆发生事故时,可喷入堆芯内实现紧急停堆。也可将硼酸溶液混入作为冷却剂的水内,作为可燃毒物补偿后备反应性。
