同翅目昆虫的1科。小型至中型。单眼2个，位于复眼间。触角鬃状。前胸背极度发育，有各种畸形和突起，常盖住中胸或腹部。本科昆虫通称角蝉。已知约有2500种，中国约有 150种。多为害木本植物，著名的有中华高冠角蝉。角蝉多具拟态，似植物的刺或突起。多数褐色或黑色，也有黄色或绿色的种类。有时有白色或红色的斑纹。
