弥散度是指随机变量方差的平方根，即均方差或标准差。在天文学中，速度弥散度通常是指恒星系统中剩余速度的弥散度。如果恒星的运动速度遵循速度椭球分布律，那么三个主轴方向的速度弥散度就会与椭球三条主轴的长度成比例。速度弥散度描述了恒星速度与形心速度偏离的程度。根据统计,偏离越大,弥散度也就越大。
