为唇形科植物华鼠尾Salvia chinensis Benth. 的全草。
【植物形态】
一年生草本，高20～70cm。茎方形，单一或分枝，表面紫棕色或绿色，被倒向柔毛。叶对生，全为单叶或茎下部为三出复叶，卵形或卵状椭圆形，长1.3～7cm，边缘有圆齿。轮伞花序6花，集成假总状或圆锥花序；花萼钟状，紫色；花冠蓝紫色或紫色，外被长柔毛；雄蕊2，花丝短，药隔长；子房4裂，花柱着生子房底。小坚果椭圆状卵形，褐色。花期7～8月，果期9～10月。 生于山坡、路旁、林缘及草丛中。主产江苏、浙江、安徽亦产。
【采制】
秋季开花时采收，晒干。
【化学成分】
全草含甾醇、三萜类、氨基酸、原儿茶醛；根含水苏糖（stachyose）。
【性味】
性平，味苦、辛。
【功能主治】
清热解毒，活血理气止痛。用于急慢性肝炎、脘胁胀痛、湿热带下、乳腺炎、疔肿。
