小型鱼，常见体长10～20厘米，最长30厘米。体延长，侧扁。头小。眼大。口小，上位，下颌向上翘，口裂和身体纵轴几乎垂直。头后背部显著隆起。被细小白色薄鳞。自胸鳍基部至肛门腹棱完全。背鳍短小，具粗壮的硬棘。胸鳍末端接近腹鳍。尾柄较长。尾鳍深叉形。背部青绿，微带黄色，体侧及腹部银白色，体例上半部鳞片后缘有小黑斑。尾鳍、胸鳍呈浅黄红色，臀鳍橘红色。
