性质:活的生物的代谢作用引起的化学变化。在有氧条件,废水中大部分有机物通过降解和合成转化为新的细胞;小部分有机物通过氧化转化为无机物(二氧化碳、氨、水等),并提供微生物所需要的能量;少量的微生物细胞物质通过内源呼吸也能进行氧化分解转化为无机物(二氧化碳、氨等)并提供能量。在无氧环境中,有机物在反硝化过程中产生细胞物质、二氧化碳和硫化氢;厌氧消化中,有机物水解产生水解有机物、二氧化碳和硫化氢;厌氧消化中,有机物水解产生水解有机物,酸性发酵中产生细胞物质、有机酸、醛、酮、醇、二氧化碳、氨、硫化氢和能,有机酸在甲烷化作用下转化为细胞物质、甲烷、二氧化碳和能。
