按热力学理论上对相变的分类，在相变处两相化学势相等，但一阶导数不等，因此有相变潜热发生，称一级相变；若一阶导数也相等，但二阶导数不等，则相变处有比热跃变等，但无潜热，称二级相变。实验和理论均显示，无外磁场的超导体，在临界温度Tc处发生的超导-正常相变比热有跃变，属二级相变。存在外磁场H中的第一类超导体，在H=Hc发生的相变有潜热发生，属一级相变，但伴随着迈斯纳效应，体内磁感应B=Bc（或原先B=0）突发性地变为B=0（或B=Bc）。对处于外磁场中的第二类超导体，当H增加到Hc1相变时，有一个（或极其少量）磁通线穿透样品，H继续增加，穿透进入样品的磁通线数量逐渐增多，体内场强也增大，到H=Hc2相变开始转入正常态时，体内B=Bc2。这与第一类超导体H=Hc时的突发性过程不同，这里是渐变过程，反过程（也包括有磁滞的硬超导体）也是渐变的。这里在H=Hc1，H=Hc2的相变无潜热，但比热有跃变时，属二级相变。
