The discovery of the Fangzi Formation in the Mengyin Basin provides the evidence for the unification of division and nomenclature of the Jurassic strata in Shandong Province and clears the confusion coused by the synonyms of the Wennan Formation with the Santai Formation.

In light of the definition and classification criteria of lithostratigraphic unit, and based on lithologic and lithofacies characteristics, the authors have newly established a lithostratigraphic unit Longxi Member, which is a suite of rocks dominated by pluvial coarse-fine clastic rocks formed in late Late Cretaceous in the Taihe Basin.
