翻开世界地图，一个醒目的构造是西太平洋边缘的花彩弧般的岛弧，象是给大陆穿上了一条漂亮的镶边裙。自北向南，主要的弧有：阿留申弧，千岛弧，日本弧，硫球弧，吕宋弧和巽它弧等。弧的后方有弧后海盆，象白令海、鄂霍次克海和日本海等。弧的前方有海沟，一般都很深，象马里亚纳海沟，深度超过万米，把陆地上最高的山峰珠穆朗玛峰填进去，还差1000多米呢！
大陆边缘弧这一现象早就被发现了，但其研究历史却相对较短。20世纪40年代前后，荷兰学者在东印度群岛进行研究（当时东印度群岛是荷兰的殖民地），发现了重力异常，认为是地壳下弯造成的。日本尽管是典型的岛弧，研究却起步得晚些。这使人想起一句俏皮话：上帝造了荷兰，荷兰人造了海岸。对东印度群岛的研究可誉为荷兰人造的第二个海岸。
