研究人的知觉是否易受环境影响的一种心理学仪器。最简单的棒框调节器在暗室呈现一个亮的方框，框内有一亮棒。棒和框的倾斜度可以单独调整（见图）。实验时,先由主试将框调节到一定的倾斜度,然后让被试将棒调到与地面垂直。由后面圆板上的刻度,即可读出被试调节结果误差的大小，也就是说可以看出由于受方框斜度的影响，被试垂直知觉是否受影响。美国心理学家H.A.威特金用棒框调节器研究了垂直知觉与人格的关系。他发现，在棒框调节实验中，有的被试以亮框为参照点调整，有的以自身为参照点来调整。他称前者为场依存性者，后者为场独立性者，但多数人是处于二者之间。
