| 龙虱科 Dytiscidae；dytiscids 鞘翅目龙虱科的通称。水生。中国记载约160种。全变态。成虫游泳敏捷，经常将腹末突出水面，由腹末的小孔排出气室里的二氧化碳并吸入氧，进行气体交换；雌虫用产卵管刺破水生植物皮层，产卵其中；成虫能飞，偶尔飞趋灯光。幼虫称水蜈蚣，圆柱形，头略圆，有十分锐利的上颚1对，每上颚沿内缘有一条小管道；幼虫常倒悬水中，腹末伸出水面，由腹末气门进行呼吸；幼虫成熟后在水边湿土上筑蛹室化蛹。龙虱成、幼虫均肉食性，捕食多种水生小动物。在鱼塘，幼虫一夜间可猎食鱼苗多尾，为害严重，个体大的龙虱可作为药材和食品，能治小孩遗尿。
