性质：根据40K每年的衰变量和40K/40Ar比值，推算地质年代的方法。用真空熔融法把矿样中Ar分离出来，往Ar中加入一定量已知浓度36Ar或38Ar稀释剂C，经同位素平衡，用质谱分析Ar同位素组分，按W=C{(40Ar/38Ar)M-(40Ar/38Ar)T-295.5[(36Ar/38Ar)M-(36Ar/38Ar)T]}公式，计算样品中由40K衰变成40Ar的量W。再用其他方法测定40K的量。根据矿样中40Ar和40K含量推算矿石的地质年代。式中M为稀释剂中氩同位素的比值；T为稀释剂与样品混合后氩同位素比值；295.5为大气中40Ar与36Ar的比值。
