Each island arc in the Northwest Pacific island arc system is composed ofcontinental crust arc and oceanic crust arc (except for the Mariana island arc).

| 岛弧 island arc 呈弧形排列的群岛。弧形凸面朝向海洋，岛弧外侧常有深的海沟，是分割大洋盆地和边缘盆地的重要构造地貌单元。岛弧属构造活动地区，有强烈的地震和火山活动，如太平洋上的千岛群岛、阿留申群岛等。板块学说认为，岛弧是大洋板块向大陆板块俯冲时，大陆板块受挤上拱，隆起而成。 |
