Ether hypothesis
以太假说(ether hyp。thesiS) 在19世纪，麦克斯韦和他同时代的人觉得，在空无一物的空间可以传播电磁波是令人难以置信的。因此，他们假定有一种称之为“以太”的介质充满于整个空间，并由它来传递电磁振动。 19世纪下半叶，曾尝试过几十种模型，但都因在某一点上遇到困难而宣告失败。用直接试验方法来确认存在着一个绝对的“以太”参考系(在这个参考系中麦克斯韦方程组成立，而且光速为。)的企图也失败了。其中最著名的迈克耳孙一莫雷实验是打算测量地球相对于“以太”的运动速度的。参阅“光”(1 ight)条。 为了把一些实验结果与“以太”概念弥合起来，曾提出过各种假说(“以太”拖曳、洛伦兹收缩等等)，但每一种假说都被另一些实验所否定。迄今为止，没有任何证据说明“以太”的存在。参阅“麦克斯韦方程组”(Maxwell’5 equations)条。
